Boehringer Ingelheim Supports Undocumented Immigrants & Sides with Latino TV vs. Donald Trump. Bravo!

Click on image for an enlarged, uglier view.
Two stories caught my attention yesterday:

One involved drug company Boehringer Ingelheim and Spanish-language television network Telemundo.

The other involved Donald Trump and another Spanish-language television network - Univision.

In the first case, a major (non-US) pharma company has the courage to support “illegal” Mexican immigrants and at the same time raise awareness of diabetes among the U.S. Latino public, whether they are illegal or not (read the press release here).

In the second case, Donald Trump evades questions about his Mexican deportation plans from Univision Spanish-language news anchor Jorge Ramos and kicks him out of a press conference with the words “Go Back To Univision” (read the story here).

How does Boehringer support “illegal” Mexicans in this country?

Boehringer  has teamed up with Univison in a “ground-breaking new campaign” to drive awareness for Type 2 Diabetes through storyline integrations in the original production, “Bajo el Mismo Cielo,” that began yesterday. According to the press release, storyline integrations will follow Andrés Cabrera, a character suffering from Type 2 Diabetes, as he manages his disease. The integrations will be supported by a custom vignette airing in conjunction with the storyline and hosted by actor Juan Cepero in character as Cabrera, who will encourage viewers to visit www.cuidatudon.com for more information about Type 2 Diabetes.

The plot of “Bajo el Mismo Cielo” (Under the Same Sky) follows Carlos Martínez, an undocumented immigrant living in Los Angeles. Carlos is a good, hardworking man who wants to give a good future and better opportunities to his children. To do so, he will face several difficulties and dangers, not the least of which is Donald Trump.

Boehringer could have picked practically any other Latino TV show to find someone with diabetes to be a spokesperson, but it chose a show specifically about the plight of undocumented immigrants and thus put itself squarely in the anti-Trump camp for which I say:

“Bravo!”
