What I said is that Meyer suggested docs have more freedom in Munich than in the US. I added the bit of historic FACT that Munich -- lest people forget -- is the birthplace of the German Nazi Party.

It's interesting that whenever the opposition suggests that healthcare is better in Europe than in the US, it catches hell from US patriots. Why should Dr. Meyer get a free pass suggesting docs have more freedom in Europe? If that is so, and given the importance Dr. Meyer and other speakers placed on freedom of physician education in improving health outcomes, then it logically follows that health outcomes in Europe should be better than in the US!

I picked up many such subtle inconsistencies in the conservative, pro-pharma thinking of your speakers at the meeting. One speaker, for example, suggested that if pharma support of CME was banned, pharma would immediately place that money into more DTC advertising, which is worse because doctors hate DTC advertising because it interferes with the doctor-patient relationship.

Your speakers were trying to suggest that pharma's ability to provide information about their products was slowly being eroded because the industry was not taking a stance and holding their ground against critics (aka, "arsonists"). Otherwise, little by little the industry will suffer a thousand cuts, no one of which is fatal but the totality life-threatening.

Industry-sponsored CME is one such cut and DTC is another. If the thought-leader physicians you assembled for this public forum truly support the industry on cut #1, they better also support the industry on cut #2 -- at least in their public statements.

It is interesting that this event was organized by PR professionals yet it is rife with many PR faus pax IMHO.PharmaGuyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10211557578124130640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8550428.post-45019460846780281462008-09-23T06:34:00.000-04:002008-09-23T06:34:00.000-04:00Peter,Thanks for your comments and clarifications....Peter,

Thanks for your comments and clarifications.

Dr. Meyer did NOT mention Nazis, but I thought it was unfortunate to suggest that physicians enjoy greater freedoms in Munich (which I note is the birthplace of the Nazi Party) than in the US. Try saying something like that to a Knights of Columbus audience, my friend. You are likely to be tarred and feathered and run out on a rail!

Yes, there was name calling. Everyone, rather than one person in particular, on the opposition side was called "arsonist" for example. I took that personally, and so would the Senators and Congressmen you are trying to reach out to. That's the bigger issue than exactly who was called an arsonist.

I did link to your blog in this post and I also link to your blog over at Pharma Blogosphere blog (http://pharmablogosphere.blogspot.com/), which I set up to link to all blogs that I think are worth reading. On Pharma Marketing Blog I only ink out to a very few blogs in the sidebar -- just not enough room for everyone. I would also include DrugWonks in my Pharma PageFlakes page (http://www.pageflakes.com/PharmaMarketingNetwork/) but the RSS feed doesn't seem to work.PharmaGuyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10211557578124130640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8550428.post-12565634440319685212008-09-22T21:35:00.000-04:002008-09-22T21:35:00.000-04:00Regarding your statement: " Meyer actually brought...Regarding your statement: " Meyer actually brought up Munich, Germany, and claimed physicians had more freedom in that birthplace of the Nazi Party than they do here in the good old USA!" You are referring -- and wrongly-- to the quote from Michael Weber, where he just came back from the European Society of Cardiology meeting in Munich, Germany, and that the restrictions were non existent compared to here, they never asked for his slides in advanced, never changed them…. In the US CME providers are forced to be censors.

You deliberately misconstrued Dr. Weber's comments as seeking to compare regulation of CME here to Nazi Germany. That is unfair and a mischaracterization. I am hoping you do the right thing and correct your post.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8550428.post-26109988032601412052008-09-22T21:19:00.000-04:002008-09-22T21:19:00.000-04:00Thanks for showing up. A few points of clarification:

(1) My comment was "PDUFuss" (rhymes with "Doofus")

and

(2) Dr. Meyer never made any mention of Nazis. If that was the connection you made, you should note that.

(3) If there was any name-calling, I certainly didn't hear it. Who was called a name? We will, @ www.drugwonks.com, shortly be posting the complete audio of the event along with the PowerPoint presentations -- so folks can judge for themselves.

Hope you link to it.

Also -- we do link to your blog, is there a reason you do not return the courtesy.

Cheers.

PeterAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
