As I'll mention during the Podcast, the "API restriction" issue goes beyond what healthcare has (and hasn't) done with Twitter, and encompasses a general trend within social, which is fostering a closed rather than open digital ecosystem. THe immediate result is forcing users to access tweets in a consistent manner, with mandatory contextual advertising -- so we're talking overt user experience, not merely the back-end mining and metrics Phil was referring to. Pharma figuring out their own proprietary platforms is one thing; instead, what we're talking about here is the manner and extent to which millions of patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals communicate with each other -- not only through Twitter, but across social networks in general. If the darling of open-source SMS has made these changes, what's in store for other platforms and media companies? While the epic question this all begs is what is the right and wrong way to effectively monetize social media? Compelling!
